Wildflower Meadows

The season may nearly be over for the wildflowers this year but Pennine Way is still showing colour. Hiltingbury and Fryern wildflower beds have given a great show this year.

The objective of the wildflower beds is more than simple aesthetics, though we can all agree they are beautiful.  It's about enhancing biodiversity, supporting the community's well-being and providing an opportunity for education.  We want to thank you for your continued support maintaining these wildflower beds and protecting them for everyone's enjoyment.

This year we have been asked for a breakdown of the different variety of seeds within the beds.  If you would like to download the list of seeds sown for 2024 please click HERE.

We must provide a disclaimer though as plants are a living entity and are dependent upon many things.  Whilst all care and attention can be given to the preparation of the soil each year, we cannot guarantee that you will spot every variety listed.  The wildflower beds are prepared, sown and then left to grow.  The beds are not weeded or treated whilst they are flowering.

Equally, you might spot other varieties of plants growing thanks to the wonder of mother nature.  Seed dispersal, soil seed bank, natural succession and environmental conditions all contribute to the rich tapestry of flora.  So, when playing ‘spot the wildflower’ don’t be surprised if you find something extra.

Preparations will be staring soon for next year's beds with the Grounds Team working hard to prepare the soil.

It's this hard work that contributed to Chandler's Ford being awarded Runner Up in the Best Open Space category within the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Village of the Year Awards 2024
