Website Accessibility Statement
Accessibility Statement for Chandler’s Ford Parish Council's Website
This accessibility statement applies to the Chandler's Ford Parish Council website at www.chandlersford-pc.gov.uk
This website is run by Chandler's Ford Parish Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change font sizes
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader
We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet (https://mcmw.abilitynet.org.uk/) has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible. Following a comprehensive accessibility audit in December 2025, we have identified the following issues:
Images and non-text content
- Some images have missing or inadequate alternative text, including councillor photographs, gallery images, and news article images. This means screen reader users may not receive meaningful descriptions of these images.
- The "Wheel of Services" infographic on the Report a Problem page does not have a text alternative describing which organisation is responsible for different types of issues.
Video content
- The three promotional videos on the Barton Peveril Collaboration page ("What is a Parish Council?", "Interview with Hilary", and "Assets of Chandler's Ford") do not currently have captions or transcripts. This affects deaf and hard of hearing users.
Interactive map
- The interactive Parish Council Map showing council-managed amenities (play areas, recreation grounds, allotments, tennis courts, and pavilions) is not fully accessible to keyboard users. You cannot zoom or pan the map using a keyboard. If you need information about the location of council amenities, please contact the Parish Office and we will provide this information in an alternative format.
Navigation and links
- Links are not always distinguishable from regular text without relying on colour alone.
- Some navigation dropdown menus do not fully communicate their state to screen readers.
- Some links that open in new tabs or lead to PDF documents do not indicate this to users.
Forms
- Contact forms do not support browser auto-fill functionality, which may make them harder to complete for some users.
- Required fields are marked with asterisks but there is no explanation of what the asterisk means.
- Some buttons and form elements have insufficient colour contrast.
Page structure
- Some pages have multiple main headings (H1) or skip heading levels, which can make navigation with assistive technology more difficult.
- The events calendar is not fully keyboard accessible, though all event information is available in an accessible list format below the calendar.
Documents
- Some PDF documents, including meeting minutes and newsletters, may not be fully accessible to screen reader software. If you need any document in an alternative format, please contact the Parish Office.
What we are doing to improve accessibility
We are committed to improving the accessibility of our website. As a small parish council with limited resources, we are taking a prioritised approach to addressing these issues:
Within 3 months (by March 2026)
We will address critical accessibility issues including:
- Adding captions and transcripts to our promotional videos
- Fixing colour contrast issues on buttons and key interface elements
- Adding descriptive alternative text to councillor photographs and key images
- Adding underlines or other visual indicators to links
Ongoing improvements
We will continue to address other accessibility issues as resources allow, including:
- Improving heading structure across all pages
- Enabling auto-fill on forms
- Adding indicators for links that open in new tabs or download files
- Improving navigation menu accessibility
When we publish new content, we will ensure it meets accessibility standards.
Content we cannot make fully accessible
The interactive map was created by students at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College and uses third-party technology that we cannot modify to make fully keyboard accessible. We have provided information about how to obtain this information in alternative formats (see below).
Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We do not have the resources to retrospectively update all historical documents, but we will provide information in alternative formats on request.
