Pennine Way Recreation Ground

Pennine Way Recreation Ground – A Green Space for Play and Connection

Pennine Way Recreation Ground is a valued local park, tucked within a well-connected residential area and offering a safe, welcoming space for children and families to enjoy.

The site features two securely fenced play areas, each designed to suit different age groups, ensuring a fun and safe experience for all.  Nearby, you’ll find a basketball hoop and a football goal, encouraging active play and outdoor exercise.

A path network runs around the edge of the recreation ground, making it ideal for walking, cycling, or scooting, and linking the space with nearby neighbourhoods including Pennine Way, Oakmount Avenue, and Stourvale Gardens.

Along the railway bank, you’ll also find a stretch of wildflowers, which bring seasonal colour and biodiversity to this often-shaded part of the ground—a small haven for pollinators and a lovely spot for nature lovers.

Drainage Works - Now Complete !

The Parish Council is pleased to announce that the drainage improvement works at Pennine Way Recreation Ground are now complete.  These works were aimed at addressing long-standing drainage issues and enhancing the space for the benefit of the whole community.

This area has historically experienced flooding — an issue that predates the Parish Council’s acquisition of the site from Eastleigh Borough Council in 2012. Unfortunately, the situation has worsened in recent years, affecting both the usability and condition of the ground.

Following extensive investigation works throughout 2024, a carefully designed drainage solution was prepared -  Drainage Specification

Working throughout August, local contractor AR Banks carried out the extensive drainage project under challenging conditions.  During the works, a significant quantity of buried concrete and other historical building material was uncovered, much of it likely dating back several decades.  These materials were carefully managed and removed as part of the project, ensuring that the recreation ground can now benefit fully from the new drainage system.

Although the ground may look a little scarred from the trenches at present, the grass will soon recover.  We look forward to seeing the recreation ground returned to full health and to everyone being able to enjoy the space once again.
