VE Day 80 - 8th May 2025

80th Anniversary of VE Day

Thursday 8th May 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) – the day in 1945 when the Second World War came to an end in Europe.

Across the country and in our own community, VE Day 80 provides a moment to remember the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of those who lived through the war – both on the front lines and at home.

VE Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the peace, freedom, and unity that followed.

As part of the national commemoration, the Parish Council marked the occasion at Hiltingbury Recreation Ground with Michelmersh Silver Band providing a background of beautiful music in the lead up to the lighting of the official beacon at 9.30pm.  The Official tributes were read and local resident Emily Blackledge, accompanied from Michelmersh Silver Band, sang the hymn 'I Vow To Thee My Country'.

It was a truly emotive evening.

The 4th Chandler's Ford Scouts proudly paraded in honour of those who served, and even provided light refreshments which were very welcome as the evening temperatures dropped.

Thank you to everyone who joined us remembering this historic day and honouring the legacy of those who served.
